Ex-Employee Revenge! How He Nearly Destroyed the Company That Fired Him

KiranaPro, a grocery-tech startup in Bengaluru, recently faced a shocking incident—not from hackers, but from one of their own. After facing financial troubles, the company started laying off employees in early June 2025. One of them, a backend engineer, was quietly let go. But the company made a big mistake—they didn’t revoke his access.

Angry and frustrated, the ex-employee still had admin-level credentials. Without using any hacking tools, he simply logged into systems he once managed. He deleted key backend infrastructure, including GitHub code repositories, cloud logs, and parts of their AWS services. This wasn’t just a glitch—it was a planned act of internal sabotage, discovered Deepak Ravindran – founder of KiranaPro.

At first, the company thought it was an external cyberattack. But soon, they realized it was one of their former team members. Thanks to local backups, most of the data was recovered, and customer data remained safe. However, operations were disrupted, and the damage was serious enough that KiranaPro filed a police complaint and launched legal action.

The bigger lesson here goes beyond the code. When layoffs happen, emotional frustration and poor communication can turn loyal employees into risks. Insiders have deep knowledge of systems—and if access isn’t cut off, they can cause more harm than any outsider ever.

The startup stories like KiranaPro is a wake-up call. As more startups face financial pressure and resort to layoffs, it’s critical that companies act to keep remaining and departing employees engaged and supported. Clear, honest communication about business challenges, fair notice and severance, and access to mental-health or career-transition resources can help reduce resentment and isolation.
