Imagine standing at a bus stop… but there’s no driver inside the bus that pulls up. No steering wheel. No cabin. Just a smooth, modern vehicle quietly gliding to a stop — ready to take you where you need to go. This isn’t a scene from the future. This is happening right now in China with China’s Driverless Buses that are taking the internet by storm.

No Driver, No Problem: China’s Bus Drops Kids Safely in Urban Streets

Recently, a post by @kimmonismus on X shows a fully autonomous dual-motor self-driving bus operating on city streets in China. What makes it even more fascinating? The bus is shown maneuvering smoothly near a car to drop off a student passenger at their destination.

As reported by the X user, it doesn’t have a steering wheel or even a traditional driver’s area. And the surprising part, it runs 24/7 on urban roads, and can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h — silently performing its job, day and night.

Not a Sci-Fi Movie — China’s Locals Are Already Riding Autonomous Buses

Let’s look at the post shared by @TripInChina that adds a personal touch to this story. It hints at how everyday people are now interacting with this new tech — how tourists and locals alike are watching, using, or even riding these autonomous buses. It’s no longer just about technology. It’s becoming a part of people’s daily life.

According to locals, this is part of a larger national movement. China is rapidly advancing in the field of autonomous driving with support from major tech giants like Baidu, Xpeng, and Huawei. They are not just building software and AI; they are also working with city governments to build smart roads, 5G networks, and real-time traffic systems that can support driverless cars and buses safely.

Self-Driving Buses in China: Growing Quietly Since 2019

However, some sources state that these self-driving buses have been operational in China since 2019. But they gained more popularity starting in early 2022, when autonomous buses began moving from concept to reality.

It started with Guangzhou launching its first Level 4 autonomous public bus line on the Nansha 23 route, covering 8.5 kilometers. By July 2024, Shenzhen planned to deploy a fleet of 20 driverless buses across four routes in the Qianhai district.

Meanwhile, Wuhan reached nearly 500 autonomous taxis on its streets by August 2024, and recently, the post shared by an X user from china mentions that passengers in North China’s Tianjin will also be able to enjoy free self-driving rides, as the city launched the trial operation of driverless buses running along a 5-stop route. No doubt! there’s more to come to stay in tune with us for more updates on China & Innovation.
