In 2012, the Tata Group, a respected Indian conglomerate, honored Ratan Tata with the title ‘Chairman Emeritus.’ This special title is given to someone who has retired but continues to be respected for their contributions.

Beyond his business prowess, Ratan Tata is recognized for his positive impact on the Indian economy. His leadership, philanthropy, business skills, and commitment to responsible practices have left a lasting mark in the country.

Ratan Tata had been the Chairman of various Tata companies, including Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Chemicals. In 2012, Cyrus Mistry became the sixth leader of Tata Sons, a big company. He officially started working in December of that year.

But in October 2016, the people in charge of Tata Sons decided to take him out of his job as the leader. Given that, Natarajan Chandrasekaran was appointed as the Chairman of the Tata Group.


He became Chairman in 2017, succeeding Ratan Tata. Chandrasekaran, born in Tamil Nadu in 1963, has a rich background in leadership, having served as the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services and chairman of Tata Motors, Tata Sons and Tata Global Beverages.

Born on December 28, 1937, Ratan Tata has turned 86 years old in December 2023. As an Indian industrialist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Ratan Tata is widely known for his charitable work, both nationally and internationally. He chaired major Tata companies like Tata Motors, Tata Steel, and Tata Consultancy Services, showcasing his diverse expertise.


Ratan Tata, despite being ‘Chairman Emeritus,’ continues to play an active role as the Chairman of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Allied Trusts, and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Allied Trusts.

The term ‘Chairman Emeritus’ is an honor to acknowledge Ratan Tata’s past leadership and the significant impact he made during his tenure. It reflects the deep respect and gratitude the Tata Group holds for him.

Looking back, the Tata Group has had remarkable leaders throughout its history, starting with Jamsetji Tata in 1868. The list includes notable figures like J. R. D. Tata and Sir Dorabji Tata.


Remarkably, Tata, who has never married and has no children, which often leaves people questioning who would be the next vaaris or successor of the Tata Group’s combined market capitalization which is reported ₹30.7 trillion (US$370 billion) as of February 19, 2024.

In the list of rich people in India for the year 2022, by IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List, Ratan Tata was placed at the 421st position. His total wealth, which is the money and valuable things he owns, was reported ₹3,800 crore. This means he was one of the wealthy individuals in India according to that list.
